To these families the honu is not only a protector, but also the embodiment of their ancestors. The honu gets its common name Green Sea Turtle, not for the color of its shell, but for the color of its body fat which is green due to the turtles' vegetarian diet. Once a popular food item, in Hawaii green turtles are now protected by law.
