My art tip this month is on varnishing. It is a touchy subject well worth investigating.

Did it rain at your house? It did at mine! I'm happy for cool air and surf and water of any kind. Luckily it was nice weather for the Waimanalo Christmas Parade . I got to be Marshall (see photo below) for the day. And... I didn't even have to use my A. K. (Le' me tell ya 'was a good day)

(Back to the top) - 2 great art tips |  Art Tip - Varnishing Paintings - I believe that varnishing paintings is important for their longevity and helps protect them against atmospheric pollutants such as dust and airborne things that deteriorate art. Mold is one of the worst. Varnish is also good for giving a painting an even shine or satin finish.
Different types of paint take different varnishes. Acrylic paints will use an acrylic or acrylic/polyurethane clear and many are available sprayed through spray cans, pumper sprayers or with air compressors. Traditional oil paints should be really dried well before varnishing or the varnish will constrict the paints' drying and actually speed the cracking of the paint. Remember that generally lighter colored "fatty" paints take longer to dry than darker "leaner" colors.
To paint traditional oils and have them last a long time takes a good understanding of constructing an oil painting. There are several spray varnishes available and some choose to apply the varnish by brush. In a perfect world oil painting varnishes should be removable with certain paint thinners and not lift off the painting below. I won't elaborate much more because this is a complex subject and this is a short article.
| Tips for Varnishing Genesis Heat set Oil Paint - There is only one varnish I know that is compatible with Genesis Paints. Acrylic Polyurethane Air Dry Varnish or Benjamin Moore's Stays Clear Acrylic Polyurethane Varnish. Do not use spray varnishes as all of them will react with the paint and keep your painting wet indefinitely. (forever!)
The best application of varnish is through a spray gun and air compressor. Do a thin coat followed by a couple thicker coats- Make sure your painting is thoroughly dry.
- Remove dust with a soft brush or cloth.
- If you don't have a compressor set up, then use the brush method.
- Have a clean, soft bristled Haake Brush and smack it around to remove loose hairs.
- Dip the brush into the Air dry varnish or Benjamin Moore's Stays Clear Acrylic Polyurethane Varnish. Brush with level strokes in one direction like up and down or side to side. Brush for about a minute to keep varnish thin. Small gaps in the varnish may form. Keep brushing to minimize them but stop brushing before varnish starts to harden (the gaps will disappear with further layers of varnish).
- Let that layer dry for a couple hours and keep away from dust while drying. Lean it against a wall facing downward.
- Wash the brush well with water and then flick excess water out. Let brush dry before applying next layer.
- Repeat varnishing by stroking the next coat in the opposite direction as the previous coat. If there are no more gaps occurring stop with this coat. If, after two coats there are still gaps, apply one more coat later.
- Let dry a couple days before framing.
