Summer is in full swing as a major milestone has occurred for us in the form of a television show on the Kauai Visitor and Information Channel. "Art in Paradise" is the start of our television experience that features Hawaii's favorite artists.
The art tip this month is on the subtleties of painting waterfalls, and my new release "Sherwood's Waimanalo" has an interesting twist within its name. And just in case you ever wanted to buy me a house, you'll get an insight as to what my dream house would look like.

(Back to the top) - Great art tip | Painting Waterfalls -
Waterfalls have an intriguing and mesmerizing effect on us. For the viewer they are delightful to look at and certain artists can make it seem like the water is actually cascading down the painting. Because waterfalls are beautiful and also very saleable, many artists like to do them. These are some bits of advice you may enjoy:
- In oil or acrylic painting, paint the earth behind the waterfall, then the water in front of the earth. The background may be wet rocks, mud with scattered ferns, or a cave.
- For the first layer use a bluish purplish color of white. You can taper the edges into a mist. If the mist goes into the caves or in shadow they can be an even darker shade of blue or purple.
- Then, build the waterfall with brighter versions of white. You may have to dry paint in between layers. I recommend painting with wet paint as much as possible. That is what people love to see.
- You may choose to do some back and forth painting like adding shadows and then more highlights.
- They key is to call on yourself and your knowledge of water. After all you are made of water. Imagine yourself as a drop of water in the waterfall. This is the perspective you should take if you really want to make that water fall!
- There is so much to know about painting waterfalls that I could do a whole DVD about itÉso someday, I will.

"Art in Paradise", the show that profiles Hawaii's favorite artists, began this month on the Kauai Visitor and Information Channel KVIC. When I told station owner Jimit Mehta of my ambitions for having an international TV show about art and nature, he said "let's start it here. You can host a show featuring Kauai's artists". I am so thankful for the opportunity and for the excellent producers and cameramen Ryan Pointer and Bruce Smalling (who also films Dicky Chang's "Wala 'Au" show). My television experience began about a decade ago when I did several short drawing lessons for "The Science Lady" on Hawaii Public Television.
After that it was mostly news interviews and environmental programs. I think my most valuable live television experience came as a rodeo clown for large rodeos in Hawaii and New Zealand. Talk about on the spot performances! Anyway here is my first interview with artist Curtis Cabral for "Art in Paradise". I hope you enjoy it. You may be next! View Video

To get this view of Mount Olomana and Waimanalo one must be in the shallow, emerald colored waters near the Kaiona boat ramp. In the distance are the beach and ironwood trees of the area known as Sherwood Forest. The title of this painting is in reference somewhat because of the view looking toward Sherwood Forest, but more so because the painting was commissioned by a true friend of Hawaii's environment named Mike Sherwood. | NEW KMACS MONK SEAL POSTER -
Mahalo to the Kaneohe Marine Corps Station for creating the poster celebrating the monk seals on the shoreline of the station. The unveiling of the poster, which included my painting of Crystal Paradise, took place amidst whipping winds at a reception at Pyramid Rock.
I though to myself "the last time I was at this beach I had snuck in inside the trunk of a car to go surfing. That was in my high school years and I got to see the inside of the air station's brig. Today I was pleased to see a place where monk seals hauled up and Hawaiian stilt birds walked around like they owned the place. This, I knew, was largely to the credit of my friend Dr. Diane Drigot who worked so hard to protect the wildlife on base.

| PAINT KIMO ON JULY 4 -
The Naturally Hawaiian Horse Kimo and I will be at the Independence Day at Mauna Lua Bay celebration in Hawaii Kai. Come paint with us from 2pm-6pm and leave your mark on this famous horse.
I first met Kimo at the shoeshine shop next to the Kress store on Fort Street Mall when I was a kid in the early sixties. Then I'd see him at Waldron's Feed supply near the piers on Nimitz Highway. When I found him again standing guard at Waimanalo Feed Supply, I asked if I could take him home. Owner Stan Kodama said "I guess every horse has its price." I named Kimo after my first horse 'Ilima's boyfriend, a palamino stud, owned by Bobby Watare, who lived in Hanalei Valley.
Kimo has been painted many times for many seasons and has become an icon for passersby's at Naturally Hawaiian Gallery which has now become Sweet Home Waimanalo Café and Market. Come by and give Kimo some Love.
