Sunsets are one of the most difficult things to paint because they combine colors that are opposites of each other (complementary colors). Orange clouds are often placed upon a blue sky for example. These opposite normally turn brown if mixed together. A way to create bright orange and pink clouds in front of a blue sky without making them brown is to paint the clouds white over the blue sky first, dry them, and then paint the bright oranges and pinks on top of the white clouds.

We will miss our beloved Ehukai, the last offspring of my dear ‘Ilima. Ehukai died in a large pasture in Kilauea, Kauai.

She was born on May 11, 2000. Ehukai was my daughter Kawena’s horse and was

the same age as Kawena. They grew up together. Some of the best days of our lives was last winter when Kawena rode Ehukai for three days in a row along with her friend Madeline and her horse. Madeline’s father, David Speer, did a wonderful job of preparing Ehukai for Kawena’s visit. I enjoyed meeting Ehukai the day she was born in Waimanalo. I picked her up each day until she got to heavy. Most of our rides were done bareback with a halter on Waimanalo Beach, or at the polo field. Ehukai was the model for several of my paintings including “Jacaranda Horse”.

The Festival of the arts at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua, Maui was so good. We shared lots of art and people even got to color and paint little pictures.

I had such a good time teaching at Aikahi Elementary and Hawaii Technical Academy this year. My friend and fellow artist Jeff Pagay was right there to assist me and we treated the students to spontaneous outbreaks of Tahitian dancing, Rodeo clown moves, and Elvis impersonations. Oh yeah, We did a lot of Art Too!
