In Hawaiian, Honu is the name of the green sea turtle and lulu means "sheltered". Honu Lulu can be translated as "sheltered turtle" (the name of Hawaii's state capital, Honolulu, means "sheltered bay"). In the background are assorted reef fish including the Uhu or parrot fish, a school of Kala or unicorn fish, and the Kihikihi or Moorish Idol. The bright red pencil urchin and black urchins are scattered among the coral reef as is the maroon colored algea called Limu Kohu. The turtle in this painting was inspired by a photograph by Michael Nolan. | | Original Ref.
