Kawainui Marsh is located in the ‘ahupua‘a of Kailua on the island of O‘ahu. In 2007, a large section of the marsh was turned over to the State of Hawai‘i for protection and management.
The painting features Ulupo Heiau and Mount Olomana, native water birds -- including the ae‘o (stilt), ‘alae ‘ula (gallinule), ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (coot), koloa (duck), and ‘auku'u night heron -- the native neke fern, kaluha and ‘uki sedges, and hau hele wai hibiscus. Look carefully and you will also see a native pinao dragonfly and nymph, ‘o‘opu goby fish, and hapawai mollusks. | | Original Ref.
