Inspiration: NEW RELEASE 1/1/2013 - It is not commonly known that orcas, also known as "killer whales" occur in Hawaiian waters. Actually orcas are the most dispersed mammals on Earth next to humans. Transient family pods of orca do visit Hawaii and have been photographed and recorded here on video by a privileged few. This scene is of a pod of orcas cruising through calm seas off the beautiful Na Pali Coast of Kaua'i. Though they are yet to be spotted along this coast, artist Patrick Ching is sure the scene will come true as do several of his future intention paintings such as "Hanalei Revisited" and "Manana Girl". |

Inspiration: NEW RELEASE 1/1/2013 - This scene is from the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge lighthouse area looking west towards the cliffs of Kauapea and Anini beach. Soaring on the west side are white tailed tropicbirds. A seabird that often soars in the mountains and nest in the cliffs. Their long White tail feathers were used in ancient times by Hawaiians to decorate Kahili's or feathered standards to signal the arrival of royalty. |

Inspiration: NEW RELEASE 11/1/2012 - From upcountry Kona the morning light warms the pastures of Pu’uanahulu (ten day hill) with Pu’uwa’awa’a (many furrowed hill) in the distance. A golden stallion stands majestically before a beautiful mare. The native Koa tree in the center of the scene is light up by morning light as is the ‘Ohi’a tree with its red Lehua blossoms. A gentle breeze blows the grasses across the open field as old wooden fence posts emerge from the shrubs. In the distance wild Nene geese take flight. Artist Patrick Ching spends time in this area with his daughter and cousins enjoying the beauty of this sacred land. |

Inspiration: This painting was created as a poster for the Conservation Council for Hawai‘i, which will soon be printed and distributed to hundreds of schools throughout Hawai‘i with educational text on the poster back. It depicts an anchialine pond, many of which are scattered along the Kona Coast and connected by volcanic tunnels and crevasses. Native species inhabiting the pond include small shrimp (‘öpae), mollusks, and sea grass, which are part of this obscure yet dynamic ecosystem that often goes unnoticed. On land the ‘ülili (wandering tattler) peers into the pond and native plants surround its borders. Hualälai is majestic in the distance. |

Inspiration: NEW RELEASE 6/28/2012 - To get this view of Mount Olomana and Waimanalo one must be in the shallow, emerald colored waters near the Kaiona boat ramp. In the distance are the beach and ironwood trees of the area known as Sherwood Forest. The title of this painting is in reference somewhat because of the view looking toward Sherwood Forest, but more so because the painting was commissioned by a true friend of Hawaii's environment named Mike Sherwood. |

Cats were brought to Hawaii aboard western sailing vessels and became a valued pet among Hawaiians. Captain cook wrote of an incident where a favorite cat had fallen overboard and a native greeting canoe retrieved it and returned it to his ship. |

 Inspiration: From the Kuhio Highway overlook on Kauai's north shore, travelers from the south get their first glimps of Hanalei Bay.  Inspiration: Along the highway of Kauai’s north shore is a beautiful waterfall that cascades into a tiny pool. When the sun floods the area with light, a brilliant dance of color can be seen in its angelic rays. A large Kukui nut tree, shown in the upper right corner, once grew in front of the falls. Kukui means “light” or “enlighten” in Hawaiian because the nuts of this tree were used as candles and torches. Be careful not to slow down to look for the falls. Instead take this lasting picture home as a gift for yourself or someone you love. View larger image...matted prints, Giclée original available. |

Inspiration: NEW RELEASE! 11/16/2011 - 20% Off Until 12/7/2011 There are places where Monk Seals and Sea Turtles come ashore and occasionally rest beside each other. Monk seals will snuggle up to anything as I learned the first time I slept on the beach outside my tent on Laysan Island in the Northwest Hawaiian chain. This painting was inspired by a photograph taken by George Balazs, Hawaiian sea turtle expert. The original photograph can be seen in the book I authored called The Hawaiian Monk Seal. It was a cloudy shot that I recomposed with a Honu I saw at Punalu'u Beach, Big Island, Hawaii. I painted the scene with a sunset setting. It was a great challenge to create the multi colored sunset reflections on the animals |

Check out Patrick's latest work of art! Artist's inspiration:Directly off the Kilauea Point lighthouse is a tiny islet called Moku’ae’ae (literally: fragment frothing in the rising tide). When the waves come from a certain direction a blowhole occurs off its right point. During the Spring and Summer months, red tailed tropicbirds called Koa‘e ‘Ula gather and fly in courtship patterns around Kilauea Point. They squawk happily and appear to fly in backward circles. Artist Patrick Ching lived and worked at Kilauea point and loves the sound and sights of tropicbirds in courtship flight at mid-day. 20% off Giclee and Matted Prints new release discount until 8/1/2011 |
