Oil Painting 2000 | |||
|
Possibly the world's rarest bird, the Poouli was discovered in 1973 in a remote area on the northeastern slope of Haleakala Volcano on the island of Maui. Since then the Poouli population plummeted and by the year 2000 there were only 3 birds left. Patrick Ching spent several weeks studying the Poouli in the wild and this matted print of the oil painting entitled Soul Provider was done from the artist's personal field sketches and observations of the only Poouli nest ever collected. The scene is of a male Poouli feeding the female at their nest which was built in the upper canopy of a native ohia tree. | |||
